Grand Canyon University Assembly Bill A2954 Discussion

The New York State legislation is trying to pass Assembly Bill A2954. This bill incorporates the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act (New York State Senate, 2019). This Act is sponsored by Gunther. This proposal has bipartisan support in the state legislature and support of New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA). The purpose is to have enough staff at healthcare facilities which will help provide quality care to the clients in a safe manner. The legislation will set nurse to patient ratios which will vary on specific units and nursing homes will have a set minimum care hours for each resident per day. In addition, healthcare facilities cannot count assistive personnel toward nurse to patient ratios. When nurses are to float on other units the nurse must receive orientation and demonstrate competence in that area before floating to that unit (NYSNA,2020). With research it is evident that having a specific nurse to patient ratio will create safe and quality care for both the patient and the staff. This will decrease the number of errors in occurring. In addition, this will allow the nurses to work properly without being burned out.
