According to UMGC, interoperability ( is the system performance ) is, “The ability of the system to interact with other existing or legacy systems” (UMGC, n.d., “System Performance Requirements”, para. 1). In his 2017 article, “What Is Interoperability, and Why Is it Important?”, Stephen O’Conner expands on this definition, “Interoperability refers to the basic ability of computerized systems to connect and communicate with one another readily, even if they were developed by widely different manufacturers in different industries” (O’Conner, 2017). With IT forming the bedrock of modern business operations at all levels, having a standalone system can form bottlenecks and mistakes. Connected systems are agile, flexible, less labor intensive, and prevent “information islands” within an organization (Kumar, 2017).
The hiring system of MTC has interoperability issues at several steps in the process. Their current systems can not provide the speed or flexibility required to outmaneuver their larger competitors. Recruiters report that applications and resumes often get lost between unconnected systems, and they are unable to provide accurate status updates to their superiors. Administrative assistants report being “buried in paperwork”, struggling to maintain an organized workflow, and wrestling with keeping unconnected departments up to speed. By utilizing a hiring system with interoperability, MTC can eliminate redundancies, reduce mistakes, provide real-time status updates for all departments, and greatly speed up the entire hiring process.
